How much does air conditioning cost in Essex?

In Essex and Suffolk, a single-room air-to-air system — one wall-mounted indoor unit, one outdoor unit — typically costs £1,700–£2,500 fully installed, including the kit, labour and VAT. That's consistent with the wider 2026 market, where guides put a single split at roughly £1,500–£3,000 depending on unit and job, with premium brands like Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric running £1,800–£3,200. Where the money goes
Roughly: the equipment itself, then labour for mounting, the refrigerant pipe run between units, electrics, and commissioning. A 'back-to-back' install — indoor unit on an outside wall, outdoor unit directly behind it — is the cheapest configuration because the pipe run is short and simple. Long or awkward runs add roughly £25–£40 per extra metre plus the labour to route them, and brand choice alone moves a single-room price by £400–£800 — buying quieter running, better efficiency and parts you can still get years from now.
What it costs to run
Cooling a single room typically costs 20–40p per hour at current electricity prices — an efficient modern 2.5kW unit sits well below that in mild weather. In winter the same unit heats the room at three-plus kilowatts of heat per kilowatt of electricity. Budget £90–£150 per unit for an annual service to keep it at spec; a neglected unit quietly cools less while costing more to run.
Cheap quotes worth questioning
Refrigerant work is legally restricted to F-Gas certified engineers. A quote well under market usually means uncertified labour, corners on the electrics, a skipped pressure test (the system leaks slowly from day one), or a unit that's too small for the room — undersized kit runs flat-out and uses 20–30% more energy while never quite cooling the space. The bit people miss
These systems heat as well as cool. Price the install against a summer of comfortable sleep and a winter of cheap room heating — not against a £40 fan — and the maths reads very differently.
